Faculty of Law

St. Petersburg State University was established in1724 by Peter the Great's edict. The Faculty of Law is one of the oldest faculties of the St. Petersburg State University. This is the oldest law school in Russia. It’s high reputation has been earned by the work of many generations of it’s outstanding theorists and practicing lawyers, such as М.А. Balugyanskiy, А.V. Venedictov, I.I. Kaufman, V.А. Lebedev, D.P. Lodiy, FF Martens, N.S. Tagantsev, I. У. Foynitskiy, М.D.Shargorodskiy and many others.

The Law Faculty has brought up the whole generations of the Russian lawyers. The names of our graduates went down in history: A.F. Kerenskiy, B.V. Sturmer, V.I. Lenin, who were at the helm of the country at different times and who ruled sway the destiny of Russia. The alumni of our faculty were prominent figures of the Russian and world culture: A.A. Blok, N.S. Gumilev, L.N. Andreev, M.V. Zoshchenko, М.А. Vrubel, S.P. Dyagilev, N.R. Rerikh, I.F. Stravinskiy.

And nowadays as well as many years ago the best lawyers of our country are our alumni. They fill key positions in public and local authorities. Among them are President of Russia D.A. Medvedev, Prime-minister V.V. Putin, Chairman of the Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia S.M. Mironov, President of the Higher Arbitration Court of Russia A.A. Ivanov, Deputy Prime Minister D.N. Kozak, Minister of Justice of Russia A.V. Konovalov, Minister of Defense of Russia A.E. Serdyukov, Minister of sports, tourism and youth politics V.L. Mutko, judges of the Constitutional Court of Russia K.V. Aranovskiy, A.I. Boitsov, L.M. Zharkova, S.M. Kazantsev, S.P. Mavrin, V.G. Yaroslavtsev and others.
