The Chair of Civil Law of the Law Faculty is one of the leading chairs in the country. Its high reputation has been earned by the of many outstanding scholars and lecturers having worked for it. Academician A. V. Venedictov headed the Chair for a long period of time. He authored about 200 papers on the problems of property, including a fundamental work «State Socialist Property» (1948). The names of the distinguished Russian scholars Professor of Law B.B. Cherepakhin. Academician of the Russian Academy of Science Y. K. Tolstoy. Professor of Law O.S. Ioffe and others are inseparably linked with the history of the Chair of Civil Law. In 1994-1995 the members оf the Chair published a textbook «Civillaw», which became the first Russian textbook for legal schools, written on the basis of the new code and the legislation developing its regulations. By 2005 this textbook runthrough six editions: 1,500,000 textbooks were sold. The group of the authors of this textbook: N.D.Yegorov, I.V.Yeliseyev, A.A.Ivanov, D.A. Medvedev, A.P. Sergeyev, Y.K. Tolstoy was rewarded with a State Prize in 2001.

Since 1991 till 2006 the Head of the Chair was Professor of Law, rewarded with the Order of Friendship A.P. Sergeyev. Since 2006 the Head of the Chair is Associate Professor Natalya J. Rasskazova. Among the lectures of the Chair are academician the Russian Academy of Science, Professor Emeritus of the Saint-Petersburg State University, State Prize winner, Professor of law Y.K.Tolstoy, Professor of Law, State Prize winner N.D.Yegorov, Professor of Law, President of the Supreme Arbitration Court с Russian Federation, State Prize winner A.A.Ivanov, Head of the Secretariat of the President of the Supreme Arbitration Court of Russian Federation, Associate Professor LA. Drosdov and others.
