History

Due to the growing need to give more attention to problems in the legal protection of the environment, the management of Saint Petersburg State University founded the Department of Environmental Law in 1992 in the Faculty of Law. Before this time, this department was called the Department of Land and Collective Farm Law. This conformed to the requirements in the Law of the Russian Federation on Environmental Protection concerning the universality, complexity, and continuity of education on the environment.

From the year of its founding, the Department was chaired by Professor N.S. Ivanchenko, Doctor of Legal Sciences. In 1997, N.S. Ivanchenko was appointed a member (Academician) of the International Academy of Ecology, Man and Nature Protection Sciences. He has over 100 academic works mainly devoted to problems in international legal protection of the environment, including his primary published works/monographs: Environmental Protection Aspects of the International and Legal Problem of Disarmament (Leningrad, 1983), International Law and Modernity (Co-author) (Moscow, 1984), Ecology and Disarmament in the International Security System (Saint Petersburg, 1993).

In 2000, Docent Mikhail V. Krotov, Candidate of Legal Sciences, was elected as the Department Chair.
